Althans demonstrates here how the nineteenth century form of the gothic novel has been appropriated, inverted and recreated by Australian Aboriginal authors and film makers to express their sense of exploitation by and alienation from colonial culture. Her particular interest is the vampire trilogy by Mudrooroo in which the Western novels Dracula, Vanity Fair and Moby Dick are used as inspiration and blended with stories of the Australian colonial past told from the viewpoint of the colonized. She also looks at the works of Sam Watson, Kim Scott, Alexis Wright Vivienne Cleven and Beck Cole, all of whom use Gothic elements in their books. Three films by Tracey Moffatt show the portrayal of the Gothic in a visual medium that allows sound and blurring of images to increase the impression of difference. Altmans is writing for a Western audience perhaps confused by Aboriginal Gothic work in juxtaposition to the usual image of Anglos-Celtic Australia.
